There is no ‘after hours’ burial tariff - City sets the record straight

The tariff was not implemented, following feedback from the community

The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department is aware of social media posts doing the rounds, indicating that it is charging an after-hours burial tariff for Muslim burials.

The department wishes to confirm that while such a tariff was initially proposed during the drafting of the 2020/21 budget to encourage burials within working hours, as opposed to later in the evening and after sunset, the tariff was not implemented, following feedback from the community.

The Muslim Community is accommodated in specific allotments in a number of the City’s Cemeteries, namely Klip Road in Grassy Park, Wallacedene, Delft, Welmoed, Maitland, Muizenberg, Modderdam, Khayelitsha, Ocean View and Atlantis.

Current tariffs are charged at R920 per grave, irrespective of day or time.
